About Meteors Youth Wrestling:

Meteors Youth Wrestling is a youth wrestling club located in the Montrose Area School District but is not funded by the District. The club was founded by Wade Robinson in 2009 when he observed a lack of participation at the varsity level and determined a need for the club at the Choconut Valley Elementary School. Shawn Aukema and Todd Geertgens joined the program’s coaching staff in its infancy and were instrumental in its growth and success. After its second season, Meteors Youth Wrestling became the only youth wrestling club for the District.

The 2025-2026 season will be our 17th year!

Our goals have been to teach the fundamentals of the sport of wrestling, instill a love of wrestling and teach good sportsmanship. Wrestling is the only sport where you shake your opponent’s hand both before and after the competition. We believe the lessons learned through wrestling are valuable throughout one’s entire life, which is summed up in our motto: “Success With Honor”.

Many of our wrestlers can be found competing at individual tournaments around Northeast Pennsylvania and Southern Tier New York throughout the season. Our wrestlers have been successful on the mat while maintaining their honor, including eight Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling (PJW) State Qualifiers (Dylan Geertgens (twice), Joseph Hester, Mikyle Fabrizio, Logan McNamara, Larissa Taylor, Addison Stephens, Hudsyn Williams, and Isabel O’Brien) and a PJW State Medalist (Dylan Geertgens) to go along with numerous individual tournament champions and a 2nd Place at the 2016 Wyalusing Elementary Tournament, our first team trophy. The majority of the varsity wrestlers started wrestling with our youth club. Meteors Youth Wrestling has produced District Medalists, a District Champion, a State Medalist and many All-Academic Team members.

We average 30-40 wrestlers per season. Wrestlers range from kindergarten through 6th grade and are from Choconut and Lathrop Street Elementary Schools; however, home schoolers and wrestlers from outside the District are welcome. Please see the registration form for additional details. Our team wrestles in at least one dual meet match with a neighboring school near the end of the season, and the coaching staff generally selects one tournament a month to support following the New Year.

The club ran as a free club for wrestlers in its’ first four seasons. In the Fall of 2013, the decision was made to join the CVYAA in order to not only be covered for insurance but also to be able to do necessary fund raising as a tax exempt organization. Registration has only increased to a nominal $20 since 2013, which covers the entire season and also includes a club t-shirt, offering youth wrestling at a minimal cost to parents. It is never too late to register for Meteors Youth Wrestling; however, a club t-shirt will not be guaranteed for registrations after November. The club has been proud to remain financially independent through funds raised with apparel sales and donations from the Montrose Wrestling Booster Club as well as awards from the Montrose Lions Club Community Grant.

At the end of the 2024-2025 season after 16 years, Wade Robinson stepped down as head coach of Meteors Youth Wrestling and passed the torch to Joshua Matulevich, Jeremy Swartz, and Mike Pipitone. This year Meteors Youth Wrestling will focus on expanding the program, standardizing the curriculum, and increasing our wrestlers’ knowledge of the sport.

Practices will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 5:30 pm in the Montrose Area High School Wrestling Room from November to March with a 90-minute practice for K-2nd grade and a 2-hour practice for 3rd-6th grade. We are also specifically encouraging K-2nd grade to join our youth club with a dedicated coaching staff for those grades.

Our first practice will be Tuesday November 11, 2025.
